After taking his MD in Amsterdam, in 1986, J. Joris Hage trained in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at the De Wever Hospital in Heerlen, The Netherlands, and the Academic Hospital of the Vrije Universiteit, respectively. At the end of his training, in 1992, he took his PhD on the subject “From peniplastica totalis to sex reassignment surgery in female-to-male transsexuals”. He stayed on as plastic surgeon and associate professor in the Academic Hospital, working predominately on sex reassignment surgery.
In 2000, he switched to the Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (Amsterdam) where he is involved in post-oncologic reconstructive surgery. He is senior plastic surgeon in a team consisting currently of six plastic surgeons and a GP, a Nurse Practitioner, and a trainee plastic surgeon. His primary interest still lies with genital reconstructive surgery and, hence, he works closely with the urologists and gynaecologists of his hospital on oncologic patients. Apart from that, he also perform surgery for the complications of benign disorders of the perineo-genital area such as lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, instable skin, scar retractions, etcetera.
Over the years dr. Hage published over 400 scientific contributions, half of which regard techniques of reconstructive perineo-genital plastic surgery.
